Everything You Need to Know about Maintaining a Healthy Scalp

By Poppy Broughton

When considering a haircare routine, most people focus on their hair and overlook their scalp. Scalp health is key to the overall condition and appearance of your hair. Neglecting your scalp can lead to a wide variety of issues, including, but not limited to, dandruff, hair loss, hair thinning, dryness and scalp acne. In this blog, Fox Pharma will provide you with all the information you need to improve your scalp health.

More about the scalp

The scalp is the production center for head hair and each strand of hair grows from a single hair follicle. The scalp contains numerous hair follicles which contain sebaceous glands. The sebaceous glands secrete sebum which gives your hair natural moisture, protection and nourishment. If your hair is too oily or too dry it is often as a result of an excess or deficiency in sebum.

There are several factors which affect sebum production on the scalp, including environmental factors, hormone imbalances, diet, age and hygiene. Some of these factors are out of our control. However, for the factors that are in our control Fox Pharma is here to help.

How to improve scalp heath

1. Aesthetic treatments

One way to improve your scalp heath is by using aesthetic treatments. Introducing the hair rejuvenation category online at Fox Pharma. Including the new Dr CYJ Hair Filler and V-Tech Exosomes System, our hair rejuvenation products cover a range of concerns to help improve hair and scalp health.

Dr CYJ Hair Filler

Dr CYJ Hair Filler

Dr CYJ Hair Filler is an injectable hyaluronic acid (HA) gel designed to improve scalp and hair health by stimulating hair follicles, making the hair stronger and healthier. Improving hair thickness and volume, Dr CYJ Hair Filler treats scalp dryness and aids the repair of scalp damage caused by the natural ageing process, stress and UV rays.

V-Tech Exosomes System

V-Tech Exosomes System

The V-Tech Exosomes System is a serum which can be microneedled into the scalp to provide intense moisturisation and increase cell turnover, leading to improved hair volume and thickness.

The serum contains polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN), synthetic exosomes, plant stem cells and biomimetic peptides which work together to stimulate tissue repair, reduce inflammation, aid recovery and provide hydration to the scalp.

2. Hair washing

It is recommended that you wash your hair once or twice a week to remove excess oil, dirt, sweat, dead skin cells and the build-up of hair products. Any more than this will strip the natural oils from your hair which can lead to scalp inflammation.

If you regularly use products such as dry shampoo and hairspray, you should consider using a detoxifying shampoo or an exfoliating scrub every 2 weeks to remove the excess build-up of hair products and stabilise oil production.

When using conditioner, make sure to only apply it through the ends of your hair to prevent oil from building up on your scalp and roots. Additionally, ensure that you thoroughly rinse your hair after washing and conditioning.

3. Haircare

It is important to regularly brush your hair in order to remove dead skin cells, increase blood flow to your hair follicles and stimulate hair growth. However, this should be done gently to avoid hair breakage.

Another method which can stimulate hair growth is a scalp massage which can be done by hand or using a scalp massaging tool.

4. Styling

Using hot styling tools—including hairdryers, straighteners and curling tongs—can deplete your hair of moisture, causing your hair and scalp to become dry and itchy. Try to reduce how often you use your hot styling tools and, when you do use them, always apply a heat protectant to your hair and do not place the styling tool too close to your scalp.

5. Sun protection

If you are out in the sun regularly it is important to apply sunscreen to your scalp or wear a hat in order to protect your scalp from harmful UV rays. Such rays can penetrate the dermis of the scalp, cause burning and increase your risk of skin cancer.

6. Diet

A balanced diet can help to reduce levels of inflammation in the body which can be linked to increased sebum production. A balanced diet is one which is rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids. Although it is recommended to eat a balanced diet through the consumption of whole foods, the intake of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids can be boosted with supplements.

7. Regulating hormones

Trying to regulate your hormones can be key to improving scalp health. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of people who experienced hair loss and thinning increased dramatically. Although the COVID-19 virus itself has been linked to hair loss, the main driving force behind hair loss and thinning during the pandemic was increased stress levels.

An imbalance of stress hormones and lead to an increase or decrease in sebum production. In order to improve scalp health it is recommended to participate in stress reducing activities.

For women, scalp health can be closely linked with hormone imbalances associated with the menstrual cycle and, as a result, it is worth considering contraceptive options. These options can be discussed further with your doctor.

8. Scalp serums

Scalp serums are designed to promote hair growth, boost new follicles and provide the scalp with moisture. How often you use a scalp serum will depend on your age and hair condition. If you are hoping to prevent hair loss, it is recommended to use scalp serum daily. If you want to just maintain your hair health, using scalp serum once or twice a week will be sufficient.
