Iopidine is a prescription only medication indicated for short-term adjunctive therapy of chronic glaucoma in patients on maximally tolerated medical therapy who require additional intraocular pressure reduction to delay laser treatment or glaucoma surgery.

Description

1 ml of solution contains Apraclonidine 5 mg (as hydrochloride)

Mechanism of action

Iopidine is a relatively selective alpha-2-adrenergic agonist which does not possess significant membrane stabilising (local anaesthetic) activity. When instilled into the eye, Iopidine has the action of reducing intraocular pressure. Aqueous fluorophotometry studies suggest that the mechanism of the ocular hypotensive action of Iopidine is related to a reduction in aqueous formation.

Contraindications:

- In patients with a history of severe or unstable and uncontrolled cardiovascular disease including severe uncontrolled arterial hypertension.

- In patients with hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation or to systemic clonidine.

- In patients receiving monoamine oxidase inhibitors, systemic sympathomimetics or tricyclic antidepressants.

 Special warnings and precautions for use:

- Iopidine is not recommended during pregnancy.

- Breast-feeding should be discontinued during treatment with Iopidine.
