Exploring the Latest Medical Trends: Mounjaro for Weight Loss

By Erin Murphy

In the ever-evolving world of medical advancement and trends, there has been a fast-growing interest and popularity in weight loss medication, as finding solutions for weight loss remains a priority for many.

Mounjaro has gained widespread attention for its remarkable weight loss results, as it works on multiple levels to suppress appetite and boost metabolism. This blog will take you through how Mounjaro works and the benefits it can have for your clients.

What is Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is an injectable prescription-only medicine containing tirzepatide. It is used to treat diabetes and for weight management, including weight loss and weight maintenance. It increases insulin production and lowers blood sugar levels in addition to reducing appetite and making you feel fuller. This dual mechanism makes it a strong candidate for weight loss.

How Does Mounjaro Work?

The active ingredient tirzepatide, present in Mounjaro, mimics the naturally occurring GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide 1) and GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) hormones that regulate appetite and can make you feel fuller.

The hormone GLP-1 stimulates insulin production to regulate blood sugar levels, preventing cravings and reducing hunger. It also slows down gastric emptying (stomach emptying) to make you feel fuller for longer.

The GIP hormone also stimulates insulin secretion to reduce blood sugar levels and regulate nutrient balance and sends signals to the brain to regulate appetite.

This dual mechanism results in effective weight loss.

How Long Does Mounjaro Take to Work?

How long Mounjaro takes to work and show weight loss effects and how long results last depends on the client’s weight, gender and lifestyle. Also, a client’s ability to maintain increased physical activity levels and a reduced calorie diet and will impact the success of Mounjaro treatment

Controlled trial results1 indicated that Mounjaro can help individuals lose around 4% of their body weight within four weeks and 6% within eight weeks.

A study2 showed that Mounjaro, combined with a healthier lifestyle, resulted in an average of 22% body weight loss within 72 weeks.

To maximise weight loss and maintain results with Mounjaro, it’s essential to ensure clients maintain a healthy lifestyle by sleeping well, exercising regularly, and eating a balanced diet.

Is Mounjaro Safe?

Mounjaro was approved by the MHRA3 in 2023 for aiding weight loss and is safe to use. However, as with most medications, it can have some side effects.

The most common side effects are nausea, constipation, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, fatigue, and headaches. As this list is non-exhaustive, always refer to the patient information leaflet included with the medication and ensure your client has consulted their healthcare professional prior to Mounjaro treatment.

Mounjaro is recommended for weight loss in overweight individuals in the presence of at least one weight-related comorbidity or those living with obesity, and not suitable for those who are at a healthy weight or underweight for risk of muscle loss and malnutrition.

Is Mounjaro Better Than Other Weight Loss Medication?

There are many different kinds of weight loss medications on the market, which produce different results. Mounjaro sets itself apart as tirzepatide mimics two incretin hormones (GLP-1 and GIP) for effective weight loss, as opposed to other ingredients like semaglutide, found in Wegovy and Ozempic, which only mimics GLP-1.

A clinical trial4 found that semaglutide resulted in a 14.9% body weight loss within 68 weeks, whereas Mounjaro resulted in up to 22.5% in 72 weeks.
